It is pretty common for someone to seek independence. When growing up, a child just wants his parents to give him the freedom to do what he wants. He wants his own job, his own house, and his own life. Some even take the desire for independence to higher level. Many will reject help, scoff at the idea of needing assistance, and even lie to themselves and say that they have it under control. Even a child of God can fall into these habits, but is it right? Is it not prideful to say that we can handle things on our own? There is no room for pride in a Christian's life. A child of God is not sent out into the world to be independent from God. Christians are sent out into the world solely dependent on God.
When raising a child, (here is the appropriate place for me to add that I am not a parent), one of the parents' goals is for this child is to be independent one day. They prepare him to enter society and function on his own. They will show him how to handle financial situations, emotional issues, taxes etc. all independent from their oversight. A big question that comes into play is how did they teach him to be independent? Did this child grow up in a home that never took a dime from anyone and never allowed any assistance? Did they laugh at the idea of needing a god to provide for them? Or, did they set the example of relying on the God of Israel for their needs? Did they acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from God?
It is okay to be solely dependent on God. In fact, it is right to be solely dependent on God!
Psalm 121:1-2, "I will life mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth."
Matthew 11:28, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Child of God, Jesus is reaching out ready to lighten your load! God knows that we are weak. God knows that we are mortal beings that can only handle so much. That is why He provides comfort for us! It is so sad to see a child of God trudge through life refusing to take the yoke of Jesus because of his selfish pride. A yoke is a wooden beam used between two oxen when pulling farming equipment, and it can be quite the load. It is interesting that Jesus did not tell us to put the yoke down and quit. There is still plenty of work to do, but when you take on the yoke that Jesus offers, the load becomes easier to bear.
There is still a world that needs Jesus, and they need to see your reliance on Him. Be dependent on God, cast your care on Him, take His yoke upon you.
Let Jesus lighten your load.
If you have never trusted Christ, you have a heavy load like no other. You have the weight of sin on your shoulders. I want to let you know that Jesus gave Himself for your sin. If you would just acknowledge that you are a sinner in need of a savior, believe that Jesus came from Heaven to die on the cross and was buried and rose again the third day, call upon His name and ask Him to save you, I promise He will!
John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
