Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-27, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
I believe it is important to notice that the rain is not specific to any person. God never said that a saved person would never have a 'rainy day.' One must never be too casual to think that when he trusts Christ for salvation, he will be rid of all his problems from that moment on. There are many things that become simpler or easier once you wholly give your life to Christ, but He does not simply wipe away every inconvenience so that your life becomes nothing but a casual stroll in the park. Now, there are some issues that a rebellious child will face that a committed one might not, but in general, what I am getting at, is that no one becomes problem free at the time of salvation.
A scribe said to Jesus, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."
Jesus was not in the scamming business. With just a quick scroll through social media, you can find an advertisement promising you lots of money and opportunities, but do you get the full story? Of course you don't. They just want to bring you in and get you signed up.
Jesus gave a clear warning of the cost of discipleship. Why would Jesus lie to someone to get them to follow Him? From the beginning of time in the Garden in Eden, God made the consequences clear and gave Adam and Eve a choice. God does not want to trick you into following Him. He wants you to CHOOSE Him.
So, now that we know that the just and the unjust have rainy days, (Matt. 5:45), we can look into this scripture a bit more. The main difference in the everyday problems and heartaches that Christians and unsaved people have is where they turn to solve them. The rain fell on the wise man AND the foolish man, the only difference was the foundation in which their houses were built. The wise man heard the words of Jesus, applied them, used them, and relied on them. When the rain fell, the hard times struck, or when he was heartbroken, his foundation stayed strong. The same is for someone solely relying on Jesus. I have seen women who had spent their entire lives with the person they love and then lose him. How do you fill that void? How do you handle that heartbreak? I would never dare to say it is easy, but I am confident in saying that the Lord Jesus provided these women comfort to handle the hard times.
I cannot imagine having to solve all of my own problems. A life of me having to carry the burden of every negative thing. A life with no true rest.
How sturdy is your foundation? Hear the words of Jesus, cling to them, live them, and your foundation will not be moved. Don't try to live this life on a shaky foundation.
